Free elearning courses on data security and protection for adult social care providers.

As part of our Better Security, Better Care programme, we have produced elearning courses on data security and protection.
You can access guides on how to use each course and go directly to each module – just click on the links below.
One course is aimed at all staff within adult social care services, and the other is aimed at staff who lead on data protection. Both courses will help staff to understand their responsibilities – and they will help care providers to meet training requirements within the Data Security and Protection Tookit.

The courses were fully revised and updated on 13 October 2026. Key changes include the addition of information on AI, and a new assessment for data leads. You can find a summary of updates within the introduction to each course.
Background
The Institute of Public Care (IPC) at Oxford Brookes University in collaboration with the Better Security, Better Care programme researched the data security and protection training needs of small and medium sized care providers, including how well current training provision meets those needs, and how the training market could be developed. They explored what DSPT compliant training looks like, reviewed existing free training resources, developed a skills assessment for frontline staff, and explored how the Caldicott Guardian role is represented in the sector.
