BCS Chartered Institute for IT: review of digitisation in social care

October 11th 2024

Digital Care Hub welcomes the recommendations in the BCS Chartered Institute for IT’s landscape review of digitisation in social care.

Speaking about the review, Michelle Corrigan, Programme Director of Better Security, Better Care at Digital Care Hub said:

“BCS’s review chimes with Digital Care Hub’s own manifesto for digitisation. In particular, we strongly agree that digital developments must be focused on delivering the outcomes that people using care need and want.

“Through our Better Security, Better Care programme, we’ve seen a rapid increase in care providers use of tech and in their awareness of data protection and cyber security.

“We believe the sector is ready to accelerate its safe use of technology – but it will need support. We join BCS’s call for the new government to provide sustainable funding and support to care providers.”

As the care provider led organisation for adult social care tech and data, the Digital Care Hub sets out our priorities for national government in England and offers our support to develop this key area of activity. Our manifesto identifies the following priorities for government:

  1. Put people at the centre of digital and data innovations
  2. Strengthen the digital infrastructure
  3. Support safe, appropriate data sharing
  4. Reinforce data protection and cyber security
  5. Develop the workforce’s digital skills

Tommy Henderson-Ray, BSC Social Care lead at NHS England was closely involved in the BCS review. He reflected on the common themes saying:

“As the tech revolution continues, it is essential that we work together to shape the systems of the future – and that we put people who use and deliver services at the heart of the revolution.

“I am delighted that the vision is so consistent, as represented by BCS’s review and Digital Care Hub’s manifesto. We need to seize this opportunity and prioritise the safe digitisation of social care.”
